Wow! That’s a lot!
CUPERTINO, California—June 22, 2010—Apple® today announced that it sold its three millionth iPad™ yesterday, just 80 days after its introduction in the US. iPad is a revolutionary and magical product that allows users to connect with their apps, content and the Internet in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.
“People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”
It is interesting to note that (according to wikipedia) Apple sold 6.1 million original iPhone units over five quarters. So they’re on a huge run selling a ton of iPads as compared to the launch of the iPhone. Now, I would expect that Apple would be selling more iPads than they initially did with the iPhone because even tho it is a ‘new’ product, with all of the experience with the iPhone now in the world, people are more likely to buy the iPad simply because it is easily understood. And of course, Apple is selling them in more countries than they initially did with the iPhone.
Steve recently said that Apple was selling an iPad every 3 seconds. And they sold 2 million in the first 60 days – and the speed seems to be increasing since it only took another 20 days to sell another million. I can just imagine that the folks working in the shops over in China are working their tails off with the new iPhone 4 and the iPads going out!
Anyway, congrats to Apple for the huge sales! (read the whole press release)
Today, it appears two big name stores will be selling the iPad besides the Apple store, Amazon and Best Buy.
9to5Mac reported the Amazon page announcing the iPad. They indicated that it couldn’t be found with a search but that it was indeed there and you could enter your email address to be able to be notified when they had stock to sell. However, as of this writing this evening (3/26/10), the page has gone offline. It was there this morning – I saw it — really 🙂
Macrumors found the Best Buy information and posted in this story “Best Buy Preps for April 3rd iPad Launch“.
“Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy has reportedly begun preparations for the launch of Apple’s Wi-Fi iPad models on April 3rd, providing its retail store employees with details of events leading up to the launch. Sources report that the iPad will initially be carried only at Best Buy locations offering devoted “store-within-a-store” Apple Shop sections. Approximately 675 of the company’s over 1000 U.S. locations offer such dedicated sales areas for Apple products, and other locations and bestbuy.com will not carry the iPad at launch.”
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that “Apple could sell more iPads in its first three months than it sold iPhones in the three months after the smart phone’s debut.”
It is strange to me that I keep reading that people believe the iPad is going to be a flop or people are dumb for buying it, but yet there may be more sold than the iPhone at its introduction?
If you watch “the News HUB” video attached to the WSJ article, you’d think that the iPad was an absolute failure already because it doesn’t have some of the TV/Newsmedia content that was rumored to be in development before the iPad was announced. Yes, I’m editorializing <grin>.
“An iPad scramble” is what they say at the beginning of the video report… because it is selling like hotcakes. But it is a downer because they say Apple is “scrambling to find publishers” and the interviewer asks “Are they going to solve the ‘problem’ before the April 3rd release?” — like this is a huge failure if Apple doesn’t manage to satisfy what the rumor mongers were touting for the iPad.
And another reporter asks “what are you buying if they don’t have the content available on April 3rd?”… I won’t even comment on that one <grin>.
“This has got to take the air out of the balloon” one reporter asks… ok, I’ll quit talking about it… LOL
So, the big news is the pre-orders. And AppleInsider provides this… “an independent analysis performed by an online Apple investor community, which estimated that 120,000 iPads were sold on the first day alone, with orders then settling at a pace of roughly 30,000 per day.” And they said “By comparison, Apple sold roughly 1.2 million iPhones in the three months following its June 29, 2007 launch.”
Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech blog is reporting that an estimated 120,000 iPads were sold on the first day.
“The team at Investor Village’s AAPL Sanity board have completed their initial analysis of pre-orders for the iPad tablet computer.”
“the Sanity team estimates:
* Nearly 120,000 iPads sold. Their math: 124,596 (orders of all Apple products Friday) minus 16,500 (the average number of online orders on a normal day) times 1.11 (the average number of iPads ordered per customer) equals 119,987 iPads.”
